What's a modern folktale?

News Flash: ModernFolktales.com is currently accepting folktale submissions. See our open submission request for details.

Modern Folktales is an ongoing literary project that will analyze the substance and language of news stories and other media sources to identify archetypal aspects of the world in which we currently find ourselves.

This project is predicated on the idea that postmodern man has done a poor job understanding both his creations and their consequences. The stories, or folktales, written about here will be used to interpret the contemporary world in order to build a framework upon which artistic endeavors can, once again, shed meaning on what has become, in many ways, a shadowy world dominated by empty symbols—symbols that are becoming ever more abstracted from the reality they’re supposed to represent.

The people and circumstances this web site focuses on have been chosen for analysis because it is believed that they represent stories that millions of other people are also currently experiencing throughout the world.

These are the stories that seethe beneath the surface of the reality many of us are afraid to admit to one another, but nonetheless compose the murky depths of our collective existence.

Their cause and effect ripples out in all directions like a shout across the dark impacting each one of us; relentless in their struggle to be heard.
